I can`t really see the point of AmiBench appearing on the CD since by
the time you looked at the site, isn`t it likely that what you wanted

When I opened it I had a recoverable alert:
Error:   0100 00F,   Task:   17AB2638.
 I noticed a whole lot of cc's attached to the
header, but no text. The same thing happened when
I opened Mark Wilson's reply.

If you can't get aminet to send you a file, try www.emailfile.com, they send
you any FTP or HTTP file by mail.

The CC: header was too long (the limit is either 500 or 1000
characters). THOR dealt with it by showing the rest in the body of the
mail, it appears MD-II takes a more colourful approach :-/

Just a quick note, Jonathan didn't write that, I did.

It depends on the program.

Yes, it can be done.  But the amount of hassle and trouble it can put the
programmer to just isn't worth it, the one major, major problem with
gadtools is that it simply doesn't have any font sensitivity whatsoever.
It is left completely up to the programmer to detect what font the user has
as his default, load it in, find out the height and widths and then adjust
his GUI to suit.

Not to mention that MUI takes care of a lot of things like screens, layout
to fit on smaller displays, popup gadgets, popup menus, dynamic menus,
saving GUI settings, remembering where you like to have the window etc.

Compared to MUI, gadtools is very limited and awkward to use.  For me to
rewrite my SimpleFTP program (close to 200 MUI objects) into gadtools,
would simply be insane...I could spend a year rewriting and it would still
have GUI problems.  Using MUI means that the GUI alone can be written in
days, not weeks (or months).

Using gadtools is like trying to get a PC to do what you want it to do,
rather than just using a miggy and doing the job in a quarter of the time
;)

But as someone said, if you use it, register it.  If you don't use it, don't
register it.

If it was genuine crap, pirates wouldn't pirate it.  The problem is that
there is so little new and good software left that the pirates pirate just
about everything they can lay their hands on.  As far as these developers
are concerned nobody is buying their software so they stop updating, and
usually leave the market.  And we lose another good programmer to the PC
market.

I can't say I have ever come across any major bugs that have caused problems
(in MCC files).  The only one that caused me problems was the tearoff
classes, and that was because I was using a beta version.  If the MCC is
badly programmed, the programmers aren't going to use it are they?  That's
just common sense.

Oh, and the users don't have to update the MCC files, all they need to do is
create a "MUI/LIBS" directory in the programs directory and put the MCC
files in there, and it won't be in with the main installation.

That's about the spec of my A3000 (though mine has 20MB and an PIV) [BTW =
the /50 points at the harddisksize the A3000 came with] and it performs j=
ust well enough. However, =A3800 is an awful lot of money for a 10 year o=
ld computer. If it was my money I'd be looking at a top-spec A1200 or an =
A4000. I know the A3000 is suposed to be the best Amiga ever but I think =
that my brothers' A1200 with 1220 accelerator performs just as well.

If all else fails, the PCMCIA network card that Scan sells works with
cnet.device. It's a little over 30 including postage.

Not much - you just need to set up IP masquerading on the Linux
machine. The Linux machine will need two network cards - one for
connecting to the cable modem and one for connecting to the rest of the
network.

Samba is probably the best way of sharing files between the machines. To
get the other machines online, you just tell them to use the IP address of
the Linux machine as the gateway and tell them how to find nameservers,
and then the Linux machine does the rest.

There's instructions in the cnet.device archive. You may not need to do it
- you might want to check whether it works without first and avoid the
hassle.

You should be able to get somewhere around a megabyte a second between the
machines on the network, but your internet connection will probably be
limited to 150K a second or so. This isn't too much of a problem - even
with a 1 megabyte a second link to the outside world, most sites only give
me downloads at around 40K a second.

Yes - the Linux IP masquerading supports rewriting of Quake packets so
everything works.

Yup. Just read the Linux IP masquerading HOWTO (it's on

my A3000+Genlock+a double cdrom bay for underneath the main box(nice bit =

colour and made of metal).Then about two years ago i paid =A3160 for my

The PowerLAN card is an Apollo card, I got one last week.

It seems that people don=B4t bother with this. I=B4ve seen many changing to
PC ultimatlely. Just say what you think at least like that I won=B4t feel
so stupid!

The first message was:

About two weeks or so I wrotte an e-mail to various main persons in the
Amiga exposing my concerns about a problem that happened to me and that
could happend to anyone. It was mainly about buying new hardware,
specifically PPC hardware,  but software too. I expressed the problem
that if I buy a PPC accelerator I, most likely, like Fleecy Moss said
in an interview, won=B4t be able to run the new upcaming Amiga OS, and in
 that interview it was also said that if I buy an IBM powerPC
motherboard I will, most likely be able to run the new OS. So I=B4d be
wasting money in a PPC accelerator, while I could be buying for more or
less the same price, hardware that was prepared for the new Amiga. This
is quite serious and I sopose many have thought about it. The answer
came from Fleecy Moss himself, and I haven=B4t posted it yet, because I
didn=B4t knew if I was sopposed to do that. I asked but got no answer, so
since in my e-mail I said it was something that could affect us all, I
now consider it is of course to share with other persons that can have
that problem. I=B4m sorry you guys if I sometimes post and just disapear,
but I=B4m in a computer room in the University of the Algarve and can=B4t
do all I want.

Actually, I didn't write that bit, I quoted it (from whom, I can't
remember). I was fighting the other corner.  :)

I have no objection to programmers using MUI for its ease of use, or its
undeniable good looks. I would object (maybe not vehemently, but object none
the less) to paying extra money for a programmer's user interface decision
(if I used it, which I don't).

ADFs themselves aren't illegal, anymore than mp3s are illegal. It's
the things people do with them that's illegal. I think it's technically
still illegal to download commercial games, even ones that were first
released over 10 years ago, as i doubt the copyright on them has
expired. *But*, for games that old, I don't think many people would
mind, it's hard to see what market you could be damaging, although
you are supporting the Evil pirates in doing so. Or an Amiga
company could buy the rights to those games and then distribute
them on a CD, so by downloading them you could be harming sales
of that...

I think my A1200's hard drive is on the way out - it keeps having bad blo=

that can only be fixed by quarterback tools.  So I'm going to get a new o=

Should I get a buffered IDE interface?  Power sell one for =A329.95 and o=

for =A319.95.  Any idea what's the real difference ? (and don't just say =

Unless the authors have released them as PD, they are illegal, and
there's nothing you can do about it.

However, nobody (with a brain) is going to flame you for using them, as
long as they're no-longer on sale, and you're not depriving anyone of
money by using them.

As a rule, anything pre-1995 is probably very difficult to get a hold
of, but if you want the game, check a few ads first; Epic and the like
have the rights to a lot of games, and you're better off with an
original with manual etc than an ADF.

i would rather have a original but its hard to get hold of a lot of old g=
ames these days.
